One of the benefits of working with a professional root worker has to do with the element of timing and planetary influence in magic.  Although traditional Conjure does not emphasize astrological timing in the same way that European Astrology or Alchemy does, many workers did have a in-depth knowledge of the planets, Zodiac signs, planetary hours, days of the week, and the meanings behind them. It is quite traditional for a worker upon taking a client to get not only their full name but also their date of birth.  One's birth-date is a personal piece of information which can be used to increase the effectiveness of work being done for you.  This is just one example of how rootworkers might incorporate astrological and planetary considerations into their work.  Some believe that work can be made more effective when it is tied to one astrologically significant cycles, planets, or days of the week.

Sunrise and Sunset: If you have ever taken a spiritual bath then you already know the significance given to the rising sun and the setting sun.  The sun is in many ways the most potent celestial body to time one's work by.  It gives us a complete cycle every single day, and it is the planet that represents our essential personality and nature in the study of Astrology.  Much lore, myth, and religion revolves around what the sun is or is not doing, where it is or is not in the sky, during certain times of year.  The eternal and regular setting and resurrection of the sun is a powerful motif for those who are doing work that they wish to make a regular part of their lives--like Success, Money-Drawing, Better Business, Personal Mastery, or Love Relationships.

Moon Phases:
Then we have the sun's cooler counterpart, the moon.  The moon has long been held in awe and mystery, for it is the celestial body that goes through an entire cycle of new, waxing, full, waning, and dark. Those who pay attention to the evening skies get to see this drama played about about every 28 days!  Women often have a strong connection to the moon since our bodies are tied directly to its cycles.  Once upon a time, when we all spent much more time outdoors and slept outside, womens' cycles of fertility and menses would be synced up to the moon.

Because of these characteristics the moon features prominently in folklore and folk-magic around the world.  In Conjure we can work by the moon's phases to increase the overall effectiveness of whatever we are trying to accomplish.  The general rule of thumb here is, work on increasing/drawing work when the moon is increasing herself.  Do banishing/diminishing work when the moon is in her waning phase.  A full moon can be a powerful time to work, although some practitioners like to do major workings on the day before the full moon.  If you know the astrological sign that the moon is in you may incorporate that into your work as well.

A common question that comes up is "what if I need to do work right now but the moon phase is not correct?"  Unlike other magical systems, Hoodoo is above all else, a sytem of practicality and common-sense.  If you need to work right now, then you do it, no matter what the phase of the moon.  We can also think about our work differently and still accomplish our goals in many cases.  Prosperity work is a great example of this.

Many folks do prosperity and money drawing work for themselves regularly.  But every month there are about two weeks where the moon is waning (getting smaller) instead of waxing (getting bigger).  What to do?  Well, some folks just disregard the lunar phasing and keep doing their money-drawing work.  You could however slightly altar the way that you think about money-drawing and sync your work up to the moon's current phase by considering the impediments that keep money from coming to you (like debt) and work on getting rid of those!

Days of the Week:  The days of the week can also be put to use in root work.  Different days have difference astrological correlations many workers, myself included, will do work and preparations for their client on the appropriate week day.

Planetary Hours: Let's say that you need to do some love-drawing work right now, but its a Tuesday (a bad day for love drawing work since it is ruled by the planet Mars, Lord of Battle and War), and the moon is waning (not the best phase for love-drawing work.)  What to do?  Do not despair, you can use the Planetary hours.  Each hour of the day can be divided and its planetary astrological ruler determined.  So in the above hypothetical, although the day of the week and the moon are not working in your favor, you or a knowledgeable worker could augment your work by doing it during the hour of Venus (Goddess of love).

Hands of the Clock:
Although this method of timing is not astrological in nature, it is traditional to Hoodoo.  there are several belies about where the hands of the clock should be during certain kinds of work.  One of the most straightforward is, when both hands are pointing up do drawing work, when both hands are pointed down do banishing/cleansing work.

It is a common perception that because Hoodoo was developed and practiced by poor people, many of whom were slaves, and almost all of whom were rural, that the founding fathers and mothers of this solk-magic system were also ignorant, especially of "sophisticated" "European" sciences like astrology.  This could not be less true and I hope that these few examples will give inspiration to others as they set about doing their work.
